Best Trucking Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Trucking companies say new rules that limit drivers' hours are hobbling productivity, shaving wages and delaying deliveries.

The crunch is pushing up freight rates, costs that are likely to be passed on to consumers in higher retail prices.

Last month, trucking industry employment hit a six-year high of 1.4 million as carriers added 6,800 workers, the most since April 2013. The economy is picking up and businesses may still have been catching up after bad weather delayed deliveries early this year. But the job gains are at least partly fueled by the need for more drivers to offset the reduced hours, industry officials say.

"The government has forced drivers into basically a five-day work week," says David Osiecki, head of legislative affairs for the American Trucking Associations.

Best Trucking Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Cancer Genetics Inc (CGIX)

Cancer Genetics, Inc. (CGI), incorporated on April 8, 1999, is an early-stage, diagnostic company. The Company focuses on developing and commercializing genomic tests and services to improve the diagnosis, prognosis and response to treatment (theranosis) of cancer. These cancers include hematological, urogenital and human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers. It provides its tests and services to oncologists and pathologists at hospitals, cancer centers, and physician offices. In January 2012, the Company received CLIA approval for MatBA-SLL, its microarray for risk stratification in small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). In February 2013, the Company received CLIA approval for MatBA-DLBCL, its microarray for diagnosis, prognosis and patient monitoring in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). In addition, the Company is developing a series of other genomic tests in its core oncology markets. The Company develops and produces two types of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-based genomic tests: microarrays and probes.

The Company is in the final stages of validating MatBATM-SLL for risk stratification in small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), a subset of CLL that presents as a mass, with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Long Island Jewish / North Shore Hospital. The Company is also internally clinically validating the MatBATM microarray in a variety of additional lymphoma subtypes, including mantle-cell lymphoma (MCL), follicular lymphoma (FL), and diffuses large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Its MatBATM array has been designed to measure genetic markers at 80 specific genomic sites where genetic alterations are associated with mature B cell neoplasms.

CGI is also developing microarray tests for the diagnosis, prognosis and theranosis of a range of urogenital cancers. These include the UroGenRA microarray for kidney, prostate and bladder cancers and the UGenRA microarray for endometrial (lining of the uterus), ovarian and cervical cancers. UroGenRA detects genomic changes in over 100 r! egions of the human genome with potential diagnostic and/or prognostic value in one or more of these types of cancer. It has initiated clinical validation for UroGenRA targeting kidney and prostate cancers in collaboration with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Its UGenRA microarray has been designed as a platform to detect genomic changes occurring in 83 regions of the human genome that have been linked to endometrial, ovarian and cervical cancers In addition, it develop and manufacture a portfolio of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) based DNA probes focused on blood-based and solid cancers that it sell outside the United States. The Company laboratory services include: Oncology Testing Services, which are based on its microarray tests and are available only in its clinical laboratory; Esoteric Oncology Testing Services, which it offers a suite of esoteric oncology testing services for hematological, urogenital and HPV-associated cancers, and Clinical Trial Services, which also utilize its clinical laboratory to provide clinical trial services to biopharmaceutical companies and clinical research organizations.

Hematological Cancer Arrays: MatBA-CLL/SLL, Other Mat-BA and LeukA

MatBA is an oligonucleotide-based microarray the Company developed for the analysis of genomic alterations in mature B-cell neoplasms to determine prognosis and theranosis. MatBA incorporates a common architecture of specific genomic regions that can be applied across the seven major mature B-cell neoplasms. As a group, hematologic cancers (cancers of the blood, bone marrow or lymph nodes) display clinical, pathologic and genetic complexity. Importantly, the clinical course of the six main subtypes of these neoplasms ranges from indolent (follicular lymphoma) to aggressive (diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma and multiple myeloma), or mixed (chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma, or CLL/SLL).

MatBA is designed to detect genomic copy number chan! ges in ma! ture B-cell neoplasms. The test relies on the comparative genomic hybridization of fluorescently differentially-labeled normal DNA and DNA extracted from the cancer specimen (array-CGH). Array-CGH utilizes minimal biopsy material and uses DNA as the analyte (the component whose properties are being measured). MatBA was custom-designed to represent 80 regions of the human genome which have diagnostic and/or prognostic value in one or more of the mature B-cell neoplasm subtypes as identified through our research and analysis efforts. Unlike other technologies such as FISH, array-CGH using MatBA simultaneously permits the detection of genomic gains and losses at multiple locations on a chromosome (loci) that characterize the mature B-cell neoplasm subtypes. For each subtype of B-cell neoplasm, cohorts of specimens with full clinical annotation are evaluated using MatBA to identify associations between single and weighted combinations of genomic gains/losses and clinically relevant endpoints.

The Company offers the application of MatBA for prognostication in one subtype of mature B-cell neoplasm, CLL, where about half of patients experience indolent disease, or slow progression, and the remaining half, a relatively aggressive progression. MatBA-CLL provides genetic-based information to guide clinical management of this disease. In January 2012, MatBA-SLL was approved under CLIA and accordingly may now be offered as an LDT by its laboratory. In January 2013, this assay received approval by CLIA and New-York State for clinical use, and accordingly may now be offered as an LDT by our reference laboratory.

During the year ended December 31, 2012, the Company had similar development of MatBA as a prognostic tool in two of the other main subtypes of mature B-cell lymphomas, namely DLBCL and FL. FL is characterized by a slow progression that in up to approximately 60% of cases transforms to DLBCL, an aggressive lymphoma. Prognostic and theranostic biomarkers of therapeutic options are req! uired for! these diseases.

Urogenital cancer arrays: UroGenRA, UGenRA

The UroGenRA microarray provides diagnostic and prognostic analysis for kidney, bladder and prostate cancer. Its initial launch, UroGenRA-Kidney targets kidney cancer. It also develops extensions of UroGenRA for bladder and prostate cancers. UGenRA provide diagnostic, prognostic and theranostic information for the primary gynecological cancers, cervical, ovarian and endometrial. UroGenRA is a CGH-based array which serves as a platform for the diagnosis, prognosis and theranosis of kidney, prostate and bladder cancers. It represents 101 regions of the human genome potentially with diagnostic, prognostic and/or theranostic value in one or more of these types of cancers. UroGenRA-Kidney For kidney cancer, UroGenRA is specifically designed to classify renal tumors into the four main subtypes (clear cell, papillary, chromophobe and oncocytoma), which is critical to patient management and treatment protocols.

UroGenRA-Prostate for prostate cancer, UroGenRA use prostate core/needle biopsy to assess genomic variability of the cancer and help in the identification of biomarkers for assessment of the risk of recurrence, to assess treatment options for intermediate risk patients, and to explore the genomic aberrations of circulating tumor cells. UroGenRA-Prostate is in the commercial development stage. UroGenRA-Bladder is a diagnosed bladder cancers are defined by the fact or extent of invasion of the muscle. UroGenRA-Bladder is in the clinical development stage.

UGenRA for Endometrial, Ovarian and Cervical Cancers

UGenRA is designed as a platform to detect gains and losses of genomic material in 83 regions of the chromosome associated with responses to particular therapies in patients with endometrial, ovarian and cervical. UGenRA-Endometrial Endometrial cancer is common cancer in women in the United States. In this disease, endometrial hyperplasia is a precursor lesion of endometr! ioid endo! metrial carcinoma (EEC). UGenRA Endometrial is in the clinical development stage.

UGenRA-Ovarian is cases of ovarian cancer. UGenRA Ovarian is in the clinical development stage. As of December 31, 2012, UGenRA-Cervical was approximately 11,270 cases of cervical cancer diagnosed and approximately 4,290 deaths from cervical cancer in the United States. UGenRA Cervical is in the clinical development stage.

Credit: StarbucksStarbucks' artichoke and goat cheese flat bread NEW YORK -- In an attempt to keep the sales and profits flowing nearly around the clock, Dunkin' Donuts (DNKN) and Starbucks (SBUX) are planning to sell more dinner-friendly foods in 2015. The endless-work clock that many folks are on -- constantly checking emails and text messages -- may be causing the need for certain restaurant chains to evolve in order to compete with go-to fast food dinner destinations Chipotle (CMG) and McDonald's (MCD). "Though breakfast remains our core, today people are seeking all-day dining, and they want to eat what they want, when they want it and where they want it -- that's why we are so committed to menu innovation and giving our guests even more options that they can enjoy any time of day," John Costello, Dunkin' Donuts president, global marketing and innovation, said in an interview with TheStreet. Dunkin' Donuts has already begun to introduce a dinner staple -- steak -- this fall, recently making a steak sandwich and a wrap with eggs permanent additions to its menu. Only 40 percent of Dunkin' Donuts' sales come after 11 a.m., leaving a lot of room for growth. Sales Boost With hardier menu items typically reserved for dinner, sales could grow at the more than 2,300 Dunkin' Donuts in the U.S. that are open 24 hours. Most Dunkin' Donuts, Costello said, are open until 10 p.m. Dunkin' Donuts may draw inspiration for dinner from overseas. "We have a variety of products and flavors that are tailored to the regional preferences of our guests around the world such as donuts stuffed, topped and glazed with everything from rice pudding to saffron to crushed pistachios in India," Costello said. Dunkin' Donuts India also offers burgers and wraps. Dunkin' Donuts' focus on food for those on the go contrasts with Starbucks' goal of trying to keep customers inside its remodeled coffeehouses. Luke Sharrett/Bloomberg via Getty Images NEW YORK -- At a dinner McDonald's (MCD) hosted for reporters and bloggers, waiters served cuisine prepared by celebrity chefs using ingredients from the chain's menu. A Kung Pao chicken appetizer was made with Chicken McNuggets doused in sweet-and-sour sauce and garnished with parsley. Slow-cooked beef was served with gnocchi fashioned out of McDonald's french fries and a fruit sauce from its smoothie mix. For dessert, its biscuit mix was used to make a pumpkin spice "biznut," a biscuit-doughnut hybrid. The event, held in New York City's Tribeca neighborhood, was billed "A transforming dining experience of 'fast food' to 'good food served fast.' " Attendees tweeted out photos and the night was written up on various websites. The dishes aren't intended for McDonald's restaurants. Instead, the evening is part of a campaign by McDonald's to shake its reputation for serving cheap, unhealthy food. At a time when Americans are playing closer attention to what they eat, the company is trying to sway public opinion by first reaching out to the reporters, bloggers and other so-called "influencers" who write and speak about McDonald's. It's just one way McDonald's is trying to change its image. In the past 18 months, the chain has introduced the option to substitute egg whites in breakfast sandwiches and rolled out chicken wraps as its first menu item with cucumbers. Last fall, it announced plans to give people the choice of a salad instead of fries in combo meals. And in coming months, mandarins will be offered in Happy Meals, with other fruits being explored as well. McDonald's declined to make an executive available for this story, but CEO Don Thompson said early this year: "We've got to make sure that the food is relevant and that the awareness around McDonald's as a kitchen and a restaurant that cooks and prepares fresh, high quality food is strong and pronounced." Although the Companys Capital Markets groups business activities are focused on short-term financing and investing, revenue from its Capital Markets group is derived primarily from the difference, or spread, between the interests it earns on its mortgage and non-mortgage investments and the interest it incurs on the debt the Company issues to fund these assets. Its Capital Markets revenues are primarily derived from the Companys mortgage asset portfolio. Capital Markets group funds its investments primarily through the issuance of a variety of debt securities in a range of maturities in the domestic and international capital markets. Watch out, Vanguard. Capital Group wants the active investing crowd to up its game.

The group, which has about $1.2 trillion of investor and institutional assets under management (or roughly half of Vanguard’s global AUM) in its American Funds and other products, released a study on Monday highlighting how often its funds have beaten the S&P 500. It’s also beefing up its sales force in the hopes of stemming recent outflows and finding more ways to work with financial advisors.

According to Capital Group, the American Funds general sales force, which works with all types of financial advisors, will be expanded to 145 from 115 over the next six to eight months. The organization also has a separate group of institutional wholesalers, 10 of whom focus on the RIA channel.

“Recently, conversations about investing have become too narrowly focused,” said James F. Rothenberg, chairman of Capital Group, in a press release. “It has become apparent that there is only one voice out there, a voice contending that passive investing is more attractive. We need to challenge that assumption.”

Numbers in Focus

Overall, actively managed funds outpaced the S&P 500 47% of the time from 1993 to 2012. But, Capital Group believes, investors have a lot to gain by focusing on active managers that “add value” and beat the benchmark.

“Most of both the academic work and the cited references about passive investing use comparisons that are extraordinarily broad,” Rothenberg said. “They take the whole mutual fund business and say that, on average, active managers do not outperform. However, we believe that if you look beneath all the data and ask the question not as, ‘Do money managers underperform?’ but turn it around the other way and ask, ‘Are there certain managers who show a sustainable ability to outperform?’ the answer is ‘yes.’”

Top Transportation Stocks To Invest In 2016

Capital Group's research looked at the results of 17 equity funds, excluding those in the moderate and world-allocation categories. Looking at one-year average performance, it found its funds topped the S&P 500 57% of the time between 1934 and 2012. That figure rose to 67% for a five-year average and 98% for a 30-year average.

Since 2003, the average one-year performance of equity-focused American Funds outpaced that of the S&5 500 58% of the time. The three-year results topped the index 77% of the time.

”The choices investors and their advisors make concerning the investment managers they hire can have important long-term consequences,” Rothenburg said.

Comparing retirement portfolios with $500-a-month contributions over the past 30 years, an investor in American Funds (after deducting fees and expenses) would have had nearly $1.1 million versus about $805,000 for the index-dominated portfolio — a difference of about 35%.

“There can be an active advantage, and we think Capital can provide that,” Rothenburg said.

“We think there may be some potential long-run hidden costs to investors who simply buy index funds for their equity allocations, and we’d like to see investors be in a position to evaluate their choices with the benefit of more information,” he said. “For example, in the work we do in our funds, if we think the market is a little rich, we can change the mix of what we own, we can go to cash, we can do a variety of things to try to protect the shareholder’s exposure. Index funds cannot.”

In the Capital Group white paper, the asset manager notes the views of Morningstar global research chief Don Philips, who said, “The active-versus-passive debate has been grossly overplayed to the detriment of many fine, actively managed fund shops and to intelligent investment discourse.”

Pushing for a Turnaround

Still, American Funds will most likely need to embrace a range of strategies to convince advisors and investors of the merits of its products.

While the Growth Fund of America (AGTHX) is outpacing the S&P 500 over the past 12 months, with returns of 24%, the American Mutual Fund (AMRMX) is underperforming the index with returns of about 17% versus 17.5% for the S&P, according to data from Yahoo Finance on Monday.

In its analysis of August fund flows, Morningstar found that American Funds lost $1.9 billion, bringing total 2013 outflows to $11.6 billion. In the same month, Vanguard attracted $552 million in flows and has seen $50.8 billion of inflows this year.

As of Aug. 30, Vanguard has about 17.5% of the fund market (excluding funds of funds and money-market funds), while Fidelty has 10.5%, American Funds 10% and PIMCO 5.4%, the research groups says.

In early summer, Los Angeles-based Capital Group began sharing more information with advisors about attribution analysis and other portfolio information, while soliciting more insights from advisors about their portfilio-building techniques. The first phase of this transparency-boosting initiative is under way, the company says, and it includes passing along reports and data to reps via e-mail communication and other methods.

Insurance Products

The Insurance Products segment offers a range of protection products and services aimed! at serving the financ ial needs of its customers throughout their lives. These pro! ducts are sold to individuals and corporations, as well as other institutions and their respective employees. It is organized in three businesses: Group Life, Individual Life and Non-Medical Health.

The Group Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, and term life products. It offer group insurance products as employer-paid benefits or as voluntary benefits where all or a portion of the premiums are paid by the employee. These group products and services also include employee paid supplemental life and are offered as standard products or may be tailored to meet specific customer needs.

The Individual Life insurance products and services include variable life, universal life, term life and whole life products. Additionally, through its broker-dealer affiliates, it offers a full range of mutual funds and other securities products. The products within both Group Life and Individual Life include Variable Life, Universa l Life, Term Life and Whole Life. Variable life products provide insurance coverage through a contract that gives the policyholder the policyholder flexibility in investment choices and, depending on the product, in premium payments and coverage amounts, with certain guarantees. With variable life products, premiums and account balances can be directed by the policyholder into a variety of separate account investment options or directed to the Companys general account. In the separate account investment options, the policyholder bears the entire risk of the investment results.

Universal life products provide insurance coverage on the same basis as variable life, except that premiums, and the resulting accumulated balances, are allocated only to the Companys general account. Universal life products may allow the insured to increase or decrease the amount of death benefit coverage over the term of the contract and the owner to adjust t! he freque! ncy and amount of premium payments.

Term life products provid! e a guara! nteed benefit upon the death of the insured for a specified time period in return for the periodic payment of premiums. Specified coverage periods range from one year to 30 years, but in no event are they longer than the period over, which premiums are paid. Death benefits may be level over the period or decreasing. Decreasing coverage is used principally to provide for loan repayment in the event of death. Premiums may be guaranteed at a level amount for the coverage period or may be non-level and non-guaranteed. Term insurance products are sometimes referred to as pure protection products, in that there are typically no savings or investment elements. Term contracts expire without value at the end of the coverage period when the insured party is still living.

Whole life products provide a guaranteed benefit upon the death of the insured in return for the periodic payment of a fixed premium over a predetermined period. Premium payments may be required for the e ntire life of the contract period, to a specified age or period, and may be level or change in accordance with a predetermined schedule. Whole life insurance includes policies that provide a participation feature in the form of dividends. Policyholders may receive dividends in cash or apply them to increase death benefits, increase cash values available upon surrender or reduce the premiums required to maintain the contract in-force.

The Non-Medical Health products and services include dental insurance, group short- and long-term disability, individual disability income, long-term care (LTC), critical illness and accidental death & dismemberment coverage. Other products and services include employer-sponsored auto and homeowners insurance provided through the Auto & Home segment and prepaid legal plans. The Company also sells administrative services-only (ASO) arrangements to some employers. The products in this area are Dental, ! Disabilit! y and Long-term Care (LT C). Dental products provide insurance and ASO plans that ass! ist emplo! yees, retirees and their families in maintaining oral health while reducing out-of-pocket expenses and providing superior customer service. Dental plans include the Preferred Dentist Program and the Dental Health Maintenance Organization. Disability products provide a benefit in the event of the disability of the insured. This benefit is in the form of monthly income paid until the insured reaches age 65. In addition to income replacement, the product may be used to provide for the payment of business overhead expenses for disabled business owners or mortgage payment protection. This is offered on both a group and individual basis. LTC products provide protection against the potentially high costs of LTC services. They generally pay benefits to insureds that need assistance with activities of daily living or have a cognitive impairment.

Retirement Products

The Retirement products segment includes a variety of variable and fixed annuities that are primarily sold to individuals and employees of corporations and other institutions. The products in this area are Variable Annuities and Fixed Annuities. Variable annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Variable annuities allow the contract holder to make deposits into various investment options in a separate account, as determined by the contract holder. The risks associated with such investment options are borne entirely by the contract holder, except where guaranteed minimum benefits are involved.

Fixed annuities provide for both asset accumulation and asset distribution needs. Fixed annuities do not allow the same investment flexibility provided by variable annuities, but provide guarantees related to the preservation of principal and interest credited.

Corporate Benefit Funding

The Corporate Benefit Funding segment includes a range of annuity and invest! ment prod! ucts, including, guaranteed intere st products and other stable value products, income annuitie! s, and se! parate account contracts for the investment management of defined benefit and defined contribution plan assets. It offers strategies for complex litigation settlements, primarily structured settlement annuities. Under the Capital Markets Investment Products, the products offered include funding agreements, Federal Home Loan Bank advances and funding agreement-backed commercial paper. Under the Other Corporate Benefit Funding Products and Services, it offers specialized insurance products designed specifically to provide solutions for non-qualified benefit and retiree benefit funding purposes.

Auto & Home

The Auto & Home segment includes personal lines property and casualty insurance offered directly to employees at their employers worksite, as well as to ! individua! ls through a variety of retail distributi on channels, including independent agents, property and casu! alty spec! ialists, direct response marketing and the individual distribution sales group. Auto & Home primarily sells auto insurance, which represented 67% of Auto & Homes total net earned premiums in 2011. Homeowners and other insurance represented 33% of Auto & Homes total net earned premiums in 2011. The products in this area are Auto Coverages and Homeowners and Other Coverages. Auto insurance policies provide coverage for private passenger automobiles, utility automobiles and vans, motorcycles, motor homes, antique or classic automobiles and trailers. Auto & Home offers traditional coverage, such as liability, uninsured motorist, no fault or personal injury protection, as well as collision and comprehensive. Homeowners insurance policies provide protection for homeowners, renters, condominium owners and residential landlords against losses arising out of damage to dwellings and contents from a variety of perils, as well as coverage for liability arising from ownership or occupancy. Other insurance includes personal excess liability (protection against losses in excess of amounts covered by other liability insurance policies), and coverage for recreational vehicles and boat owners. Most of Auto & Homes homeowners policies are traditional insurance policies for dwellings, providing protection for loss on a replacement cost basis. These policies also provide additional coverage for reasonable, normal living expenses incurred by policyholders that have been displaced from their homes.

International

International provides life insurance, accident and health insurance, credit insurance, annuities, endowment and retirement & savings products to both individuals and groups. Pity poor MetLife (NYSE: MET  ) . Never has a life insurer shed more in an attempt to wind up with less. In MetLife's case, its sale of its retail banking unit to GE Capital (NYSE: GE&! nbsp;&nbs! p;) was an exercise in frustration, as one regulatory hurdle rose up to replace those already vanquished. At the end of last year, the sale was finally given the green light, effectively pulling MetLife out from under the banking regulators' scrutiny.
