American States Water (AWR) provides water service to one of 36 Californians throughout the northern, coastal and southern regions of the state.
In their recent earnings report, AWR showed an 11.1% increase in diluted earnings per share, but revenues fell short of analyst estimates by 2% due to an increase in the effective income tax rate for the company’s water segment.

On Tuesday, analysts at Brean Capital upgraded American States Water Co (AWR), as they now believe the shares have reached an attractive entry point.
The analysts upgraded AWR from “Hold” to “Buy” and see shares reaching $28. This price target suggests an 11% upside to the stock’s Monday closing price of $25.22.
Brean Capital analyst Michael Gaugler said, “The shares have fallen to a price level that we now consider attractive, and our sum-of-the-parts valuation indicates fair value is $28 based on our 2014 EPS forecasts. We recommend investors begin accumulating positions under the $25.50 price level to allow sufficient (10%) upside (excluding dividends) to our target price.”
“We acknowledge that the current environment for utility stocks in terms of interest rate impacts is less than ideal. However, we note the shares of AWR (and our other utility coverage names) have traded at higher P/E multiples when the general level of interest rates was much higher. We see the impact of higher rates as short term and negligible, particularly when we look closely at AWR’s ability to continue to raise its dividend payout versus the peer group by using free cash flow from the ASUS business,” Gaugler added.
American States Water shares were up 72 cents, or 2.85%, during early morning trading on Tuesday. The stock is up 8% year-to-date.

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO) is up by less than 1% despite being touted in Barron’s over the weekend. The financial publication showed that more good is coming here and that shares could rise by another 30%. The only point we might make is that video game stocks already areseeing such high gains ahead of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 that we cannot help but wonder if all the good news has been priced in even before the new consoles hit the retail shelves.

Sales of video games and consoles have been sluggish, but shares of the game makers are soaring. The research group NPD reports that domestic sales of video games by retailers fell nearly 10 percent in the first-quarter. But investors are overlooking some middling performance and focusing on what they hope will be an exciting future. So far this year, shares of Activision Blizzard (ATVI) and Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) have both soared by more than 40 percent. Industry leader Electronic Arts (EA) is up 24 percent. And retailer Gamestop (GME) has beat them all, up 49 percent since the beginning of the year. Electronic Arts and Activision will report first quarter results this week, and analysts aren't expecting anything special. Invision for Xbox/AP Images So what's driving the stocks higher despite so-so performance? It's the expectation for a new round in the console war, with new Xbox and PlayStation models rolling out in time for the holidays. Microsoft (MSFT) is expected to unveil the new Xbox on May 21st. And we already know Sony's (SNE) PlayStation 4 will have touch-sensing controllers and a 'share' button to allow gamers to live-cast their play to friends. Sony is likely to release more details at next month's E3 videogame conference. In the meantime, though, console sales have slumped as gamers await the new models, or anticipate that current models will be deeply discounted. As for the game makers, they've had some high profile releases this year. EA has "Crysis 3" and "Dead Space 3". Analysts will be watching sales of those games when the company reports. EA has also been dealing with the surprise resignation in mid-March of its CEO. The company has not yet named a replacement. And the company warned that its earnings for the first-quarter were likely to fall short of Wall Street expectations.
