Hot Gas Stocks To Own For 2014

I'm sure you've heard it said that you have to spend money to make money. Several companies in the oil and gas industry have a different spin on that phrase, as these companies believe you need to spend money in order to save it. In each case the company is building out its own business unit to save the money it would have spent by contracting with a third party. In doing so, these companies are also building up a hidden asset that one day could be unlocked.

An Oasis of hidden value
The Bakken has created a lot of value for energy investors; however, that value doesn't come cheap. It's very expensive to drill in the Bakken, with costs upwards of $10 million per well. To get that cost down, exploration and production companies are exploring all options, including taking well services in-house.

That's exactly what Oasis Petroleum (NYSE: OAS  ) decided to do when it formed Oasis Well Services. The company made an initial investment of $24 million in equipment, which has been money well spent. The business is exceeding expectations both in terms of performance and savings since completing its first frac job last March. In the past year the business saved the company $17.5 million in capital, and it expects to save about $500,000 per gross well going forward. It also expects to generate about $200,000 per gross well of incremental cash flow from its non-operated partners going forward. This has enabled the company to already recoup its initial investment in the business.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt DiLallo]

This has taken its toll on investors who have subsequently taken out their frustrations on these management teams. So far this year we've seen embattled Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK  ) CEO Aubrey McClendon "retire" with the likelihood that SandRidge Energy (NYSE: SD  ) CEO Tom Ward will soon be following suit. McClendon's retirement didn't last very long as he's already lined up new work, but it still begs the question of whether or not we've seen the end of the wildcatter CEO.

Although other large-cap service companies have exposure to Russia, we believe the effect is also minimal. Specifically, Weatherford (WFT) has noted that the Russian sanctions are not a concern as this is a very small portion of its business. In addition, this business is not impacted by the sanctions which are against Arctic and shale-related technologies. We estimate that Weatherford’s revenue in Russia is less than 3% of our estimated 2014 revenue.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

Had Samson Oil & Gas Limited (NYSEMKT:SSN) made the late-July surge and subsequent early-August pullback and then gotten stuck in the mud again, I might not even bother taking a look at it. That's not how it happened though. Since the pullback, SSN has perked up again, perhaps not as hot as it was with the initial rally at the end of last month, but more than hot enough to get my attention. I suspect another surge - perhaps a longer-lasting surge - is in the cards.

  • [By Josh Young]

The above could have described Sanchez's (SN) acquisition of Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS) acreage, announced on August 8th, 2013. Sanchez bought a position in the TMS for approximately $2,000 per acre, giving Sanchez exposure to the play and providing a nice comp for Goodrich Petroleum (GDP), the leading public company in the TMS play. Goodrich had been trading at a lower implied value per TMS acre, net of the value of its other assets. Unsurprisingly, since then Goodrich has traded up substantially (incidentally, so has Sanchez):
