Top Internet Companies To Watch In Right Now

It's a scary cyber-world out there, and fear concerning Internet security is one of the top reasons that bank customers avoid mobile banking. For banks, expanding mobile offerings is win-win, enabling them to shutter expensive branch locations while opening newer, more modern spaces that cater to banking via the Internet.

So, what do banks need to do to assuage customers' fears about mobile banking -- and, more importantly, what is being done to improve security measures to protect consumers' private information?

Many reasons to worry
Cyber crime is becoming more prevalent, and recent attacks on banks' websites, in addition to the recent ATM heist in Manhattan, were highlighted at the Reuters Cybersecurity Summit last month as prime examples of holes in the current framework of network security. A surveylast year by Internet security company Metaforic showed that 68% of smartphone users have yet to use mobile banking because of worries about security, and the company's CEO opined that mobile banking apps and the banks that offer them don't do enough to ameliorate risks.

Rather than pick the obvious candidates, I also like to look for great stocks to buy that might not be on most investorsradar. Here are three such stocks to buy:

    InterActiveCorp (IACI)

InterActiveCorp (IACI) is Barry Diller conglomerate of internet companies, not terribly different from John Malone Liberty Interactive (LINTA). The strategy for IACI stock has been to wait for a leader in a given sector to emerge and then buy it up, or at least a portion of it. These businesses either have a history of generating lots of cash flow, or have the potential to do so.

In a sudden move, Symantec (SYMC) has terminated its CEO, Steve Bennett. And Wall Street is definitely concerned, as SYMC stock is off about 12% in today trading.

  • [By Tim Melvin]

The first "insider" stock to buy is Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC), one of the leading internet security providers in the world.

Symantec makes a wide range of products that help individuals and businesses keep their computers and mobile devices safe from viruses and malware. The stock recently dropped sharply after the company fell short of analysts' quarterly earnings expectations, but CEO Stephen Bennett clearly disagrees with the market's opinion of the company's prospects. He got out his checkbook and added 1,000,000 shares of stock for a total cost of more than $2.2 million. He now owns 488,000 shares of Symantec stock and clearly has high expectations for the future of Symantec's stock price.

Of course, banks can't know when an attack is merely disruptive, and when it may be covering for criminal activity. Security company Symantec (NASDAQ: SYMC  ) has commented that these assaults have become a way for hackers to distract banks while funds are illegally withdrawn. Though most of the thefts have occurred in Europe, where attacks have progressed from website outages to actual bank heists, at least one U.S. bank, Citigroup, disclosed some losses due to cyber thievery earlier this year.

Ebay is an established company that has made a name for itself pioneering internet commerce. After a week full of disses from new eBay investor Carl Icahn, board member Marc Andreessen has come forward to defend himself in an interview with the Wall Street Journal after letting CEO John Donahoe and founder Pierre Omidyar do it for him. The stock has moved higher in recent years, but is currently pulling back. Over the last four quarters, earnings and revenues have been rising, which has left investors pleased. Relative to its peers and sector, eBay has been a relative year-to-date performance leader. Look for Ebay to OUTPERFORM.

Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX  ) isn't just eyeing TV shows in its push for original streaming content. In a world where it's starting to bid against Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) and now a reinvigorated Hulu for proprietary content, Netflix is looking beyond the serialized dramas and cult sitcom revivals that have proved magnetic to both audiences and Emmy nominations.

This being said, it should also be factored in that brick and mortar retailers faced certain generic unfavorable conditions in December and this poor performance could be a one-off case. It is actually impressive to see that Wal-Mart is at least stepping up its game in e-retailing, which is under its control and can be leveraged. For instance, this report points out the company's plans to push for an e-retailing business model in India similar to that of Amazon (AMZN) and eBay (EBAY). This is a significant step from the company considering the fact that it failed to establish brick and mortar stores in the country after hanging there for almost six years.

Advisors' Opinion:

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."
